Sebastian-Romero-Radigales

Consul-General at the Spanish Legation in Athens, arrived in Greece after the Salonikan Jews had already been transported to Auschwitz. 510 of the deportees claimed Spanish heritage. Radigales proceeded to do everything in his power to repatriate these Jews and their families to Spain, although he was blocked at every turn by Spanish policy and its foreign ministry. When a group of 367 Jews with Spanish citizenship was eventually taken to Bergen-Belsen in August 1943, Radigales successfully brought about a change in Spanish foreign policy and they were permitted to leave for Morocco in early 1944. Radigales also intervened to have Jewish prisoners released from the Haidari detention camp; held assets of Jewish deportees; and supported those who had gone into hiding. For his actions he was named Righteous Among the Nations on February 26, 2014.
