Director of the Department of Foreign Interests at the Swiss Legation in Budapest and Ernst Vonrufs were both businessmen who were asked to deal with Jewish affairs, with Zürcher as Head and Vonrufs as secretary. Under the direction of Carl Lutz, they negotiated with the Arrow Cross to protect not only Hungarian Jews but also foreign Jews trapped in Budapest. They rescued Jews from death marches and ensured their continued protection in the numerous Swiss safe houses. The rescue efforts of Carl Lutz and his colleagues, including Peter Zürcher, is estimated to have saved over 60,000 Jews. He was named Righteous Among the Nations on October 22, 1988.
