Joseph-Willem-Kolkman

Honorary Vice-Consul at the Dutch Consulate in France and later of the Offices Néerlandais was honored as a Righteous Among the Nations on February 17, 2013. Kolkman made many attempts to free refugees from the terrible French internment camps and made contacts with the French and Dutch underground to facilitate those efforts. Kolkman personally sheltered dozens of Jews at his home and established illicit networks to smuggle refugees out of France. The Germans forcibly closed the Offices Néerlandais in 1942, stranding Kolkman in France. He and his wife tried to escape through the Pyrenees in 1943, but they were captured. She was eventually freed but he was imprisoned in the Dora-Nordhausen subcamp and perished during transport to Lublin in 1944.
