Ján-Spišiak-Slovakia

Minister at the Slovak Consulate in Budapest, aided Jews who had fled Slovakia and then sought to return as persecution and deportation of Jews in Hungary escalated in 1944. Many of them were Jewish children who needed to be returned to their parents. Spišiak sought authorization to facilitate the return of Slovak Jews, but his request was denied. He helped them anyway, providing passports with false identities to many Jews, which some used to return home, and others to continue their own rescue efforts. The German Plenipotentiary asked Berlin to pressure the Slovaks to stop Spišiak and allow them to carry out their deportation measures unfettered. Spišiak’s defiance resulted in his nomination to Righteous Among the Nations on December 25, 2006.
