Acting Consul-General of the Spanish Legation in Hungary, took over this role upon the departure of Ángel Sanz Briz, even though he was not Spanish and had no authority to do so. He began calling himself Jorge and made use of the official seals and letterhead left behind to call for the end to antisemitic persecution. He continued to protect and provision the Jews in the Spanish Legation and numerous safe houses and also undertook negotiations with the Arrow Cross, often openly confronting them during their frequent attempts to enter safe houses. He also demanded entry to jails to release Jewish prisoners and issued Spanish letters of protection which were used to remove Jews from death marches. Perlasca’s bold, brave actions saved many thousands of Jews, and he was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations on June 9, 1988.
