Secretary to the Apostolic Nuncio at the Apostolic Nunciature in Budapest, was declared Righteous Among the Nations on April 30, 2007 for his role in saving the Jews of Budapest. Verolino served as Monsignor Angelo Rotta’s secretary and was party to all the same actions as Rotta. They began issuing protective Vatican letters in summer 1944, and Verolino traveled to the northern borders to remove Jews from the death marches to Austria. He negotiated with neutral powers to ensure the protection and provisioning of the safe houses, and he put himself in harm’s way during multiple confrontations with the Arrow Cross, which refused to respect the extraterritoriality of protected buildings. Verolino also provided documents to Jews stating that they worked for the Nunciature, which protected them from harassment and deportation.
