Elena-Hohenzolleren

Queen Mother of Romania, was born in Greece and married the Crown Prince of Romania. And unhappy union, she didn’t return to Romania until 1940 when her son was crowned king of Romania. She attempted unsuccessfully to dissuade dictator Ion Antonescu from sending the Jew of Bukovina, Bessarabia and Dorohoi to Transnistria in 1941; in 1942 she received permission for them to receive humanitarian aid from Jewish relief organizations, and refuted efforts to expel Jews from the Old Kingdom of Romania. By 1943 she had persuaded her son and Antonescu that the Jews still alive should be allowed to return from Transnistria, a move which spared thousands. She was honored as Righteous Among the Nations on March 11, 1993.
