Dr-Ho-Feng-Shan

First Secretary at the Chinese Legation in Vienna, aided hundreds, if not thousands of Austrian Jews in their efforts to flee the country after the 1938 Anschluß by issuing them Chinese visas. Without a visa, Jews couldn’t leave the country. Ho’s superior, hoping to curry favor with the German occupiers, ordered that no Chinese visas be provided. Ho flagrantly defied this order, while also protecting other Jews by visiting them in their homes, thus shielding them with his diplomatic status. Ho issued visas until he was transferred to the US as punishment for his insubordination. Ho’s defiance earned him the designation Righteous Among the Nations on August 7, 2000.
