Archbishop-Theophilos-Damaskinos

Archbishop of Greece, called for immediate action upon hearing of the forced deportation of the Thessalonikan Jews in 1943. Unfortunately, all of his direct appeals to the Greek Prime Minister and the German leadership in Greece were to no avail. Undeterred, Damaskinos warned the Jews of what lay ahead and ordered all clergy and convents extend every effort to provide aid and shelter to Greek Jews. In concert with the Greek Chief of Police, thousands of false identity cards with Greek names were given to Jews in hiding or used to help them escape. Damaskinos was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations on July 21, 1970.
